Thank you for this thread GolfDelta, it remind me that among economical cars or "tool cars", some went from Soviet Union or east european countries.

Fiat Polski 1300 - 1971

Fiat 133 - 1975 - Amazing car with rear engine made in Poland, derived from Fiat 850 itself derived from Fiat 600 (1955 !)

Fiat Polonez - 1979

Lada 1200 - 1979

Lada 1500 - 1976

Lada Niva - 1978

Designed by Citroën and expected to replace the Ami 8, the project was sold to Romania with the manufactory at Craiova. The car was presented at Bucarest motorshow in 1981 under the name Oltcit then came back in France as Citroën Axel in 1984, more of ten years after it design.

Skoda 1100 - 1971 (Czechoslovakia)

Zastava 1100 - 1973 (Yougoslavia) Derived from Fiat 128

Like it ennemy sister Fiat 128, Zastava 1100 was a modern car at this time, with a low cost in more. :thumbs up:

At this age we had in France a famous clown named Zavata and, of course, l'Auto-Journal made a bad word game Zavata-Zastava X_X

We had to wait 1988 and 1990 for seeing Lada then Skoda to present a modern front-wheels-drive with a compact five doors body. It was the Samara and the Favorit.

From René Bonnet to Matra-Sports

In 1962, René Bonnet made this interesting coach named Djet starting from a race car with central engine. It is the first car with this arrangement intended for the public. The mechanical come from a Renault 8 and the body, made in polyester resin, is assembled on a tubular frame (then on a beam-frame for the "serie")

Unhappily, René Bonnet in front of huge financial difficulties had to sell his firm to his main creditor Matra, a famous french missile and satellite constructor at this age. This company see here an excellent opportunity to change its image and expect to promote its name throught automobile competition. At the Paris motorshow 1964, René Bonnet became Matra-Bonnet.

On this drawing, we can see easily the location of the Renault motor, in front of the rear wheels.

Matra-Bonnet Djet is different from René Bonnet Djet with its longer rear that allow a bigger trunk. Wider tracks increase the stability of the vehicle. At this age, Matra said that more of hundred modifications were made on the Djet.

In 1965 appear a Luxe version, far from the rusticity of the first René Bonnet Djet.
3 motors :
- Djet V : Renault 8 1100 - 70 ch
- Djet VS : Renault 8 Gordini 1100 - 94 ch
- Jet 6 : Renault 8 Gordini 1300 - 105 ch
Starting 1966 the name Djet become Jet and Matra-Bonnet become Matra (poor René Bonnet!) ; the production stopped in 1968 after 1689 copies made.

3 years only after Matra-Sports beginning in the automobile world, V12 Matra motor designed for the competition made its first rounds.
In 1967, with this V12 engine, the constructor has 3 objectives :
- the world championship F1 1969 (they will win with MS80 but the motor is still a Ford Cosworth). The famous V12 will win only one Grand Prix :(
- "24 heures du Mans" 1970 (it will be 72, 73 and 74!)
- a prestigious GT that we are waiting for still today.

Jacky Stewart won the championship F1 1969 with this MS80

Matra won "24 Heures du Mans" for the last time in 1974 with this MS 670B

1967 - 1973 : Matra 530 is the first model designed by Matra-Sports around a central motor V4 Ford 1700 cm3. It is a coach 2+2 places in polyester resin with a roof in 2 parts that we can dismantle and put away in the front trunk.

In december 1969, Matra-Sports sign a commercial agreement with Simca-Chrysler. Matra 530 will be sold and repaired in the Simca dealerships.

1973 - 1980 : Matra-Simca Bagheera
This new coach has 3 frontal places and a Simca 1100TI engine (1300 cm3) just behind. Suspension and steering are also derived from Simca 1100.

1980 - 1983 : Talbot-Matra Murena
The daughter of the Bagheera is available in 2 versions : 1600 cm3 or 2200 cm3

1977 - 1983 : Matra-Simca then Talbot-Matra Rancho
A leisure activities vehicle assembled around a van Simca 1100
A best-seller and, from far, the most profitable Matra ever (automobile, it is only a fashion story)

Matra-Simca Bagheera Courrèges

At Paris motorshow 1974, Matra presents a Bagheera reviewed by the sewing-man André Courrèges, an upperscale model painted in a specific white matt colour. It is replaced by Bagheera X in 1977.

Notice new bumpers and the longer rear window of Bagheera serie II starting 1976.

Manufacture is beginning at Dieppe at spring 1972. Anti-sun strips of the rear window are not kept for the serie.

A 310 4 cylinders 1600 cm3 can be recognized by its six head lights in front.
