"Growing Pains" star Andrew Koenig found dead in Vancouver
The body of former "Growing Pains" star Andrew Koenig was found dead in a Vancouver park on Thursday, capping of a search that lasted several days in the British Columbia city. Speaking at the Vancouver Police Department, Andrew's mother Judith and father Walter (who played Chekov on "Star Trek") confirmed reports that the actor committed suicide. They then encouraged others out there with suicidal thoughts to search for help:
“If you’re one of those people and you feel you can’t handle it anymore, you know, if you can learn anything from this, it’s that there’s people out there who really care.”
The search for Koenig began this weekend after it had been several days since he missed a flight coming back to the United States. The actor was last officially spotted on February 14, though there was some evidence in existence (including a recent payment to his landlord) that suggested he was still planning on continuing his life.
The search for Koenig was made especially difficult by the influx of people present in Vancouver for the Olympic Winter Games; with the police force so stretched out, Walter and Judith asked for help from anyone willing.
Now, in the midst of mourning her son's death, Judith is offering those people praise: “All the people up here, from the police to his friends, have shown love which he didn’t realize was available to him."
