What kind of smoothies do you like? Plus, do you just buy them when you're out or do you make them yourself?

I sometimes make them myself -with frozen yogurt and whatever kind of fruit is to hand.

I'm with you on the make-'em-yourself, Daedalus. The occasional store-bought one is fine, but they're way too expensive on a regular basis and I'd have to drive to get to a smoothie bar.

Having lots of frest fruit always in the fridge and on the shelf, and yougourt and other fixins, and one of those industriual blenders similar to what they use professionally, I can whomp up a large pitcher of smoothies for myself or to serve when friends drop by. Personal fav = orange/banana/mango.:)

Not Quite What I Thought

The thread was not quite what I thought it was going to be, but anywho--I long for the day of the original smoothie, the Orange Julius. I realise now it wasn't so good for you, but the taste...they just don't make them like they use to.

I thought you meant guys with shaved chest and pubes...

SHRRRLLLLLPPP!!

I tend to make my own smoothies. When I get home from a run or a workout, I replace my energy with the following: Fruit juice (whatever variety I happen to have on hand), plus a few scoops of protein powder, plus a dollop of plain yoghurt. Then if I have any fresh fruits of the sort that I can toss in, such as grapes, strawberries, banana etc., I'll throw those in too. Blend for about 15 seconds, and serve. :)

My favorite is a Pina Colada Smoothie.
Too bad I'm diabetic, though!

So skip any sweetners or the yogurt (very high in carbs) and use fresh fruit and low fat stuff, and calculate your insulin/diet for the sugar in the fruit. A cup of fresh pineapple chunks is about 22 grams of carb.:thumbs up:

and the yoghurt doesn't have to be high in calories. Avoid those little tubs of sweetened flavoured yoghurt - go for the big 1kg tubs of plain yoghurt. Greek style or the smoother creamier style, whichever takes your fancy.

The nice thing about smoothies is that they give you a way of using up the runny stuff that sometimes separates out from the yoghurt (just pour it into the blender), as well as fruit that has got past the fresh stage and is becoming slightly squishy. It wouldn't taste so good to just eat the fruit straight, but mixed up with everything else in the blender the taste is just fine.

The strangest "smoothies" I ever had were in Ecuador, where they gave the option of having alfalfa sprouts tossed in the mixture and ground up and blended. Doesn't taste too bad, actually.
