Jacques Chirac, former French president, dies aged 86

Chirac will be remembered internationally for leading France’s strong opposition to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, when approval ratings for his anti-war stance in France soared to 90%. “War is always a last resort. It is always proof of failure. It is always the worst of solutions, because it brings death and misery,” he said a week before the US-led coalition forces invaded Iraq. He warned that any occupation of Iraq would prove a “nightmare”. Btw, our own Jean Chretien also opposed the Iraq war.

Rip TAYLOR (1934)
US Actor and Comedian

Through his 60 year career on TV talk shows, game shows, cameos, films and clubs Rip never officially came out - though is stage personality was as campy as it gets, throwing confetti at guests and the audience. He was the grand marshal of the 2009 DC Gay Pride Festival, though.

Diahann CARROLL (1935)
US Actor, Singer, Model and Activist

Carroll starred in musical films in the 50s (Carmen Jones and Porgy and Bess) and then was the first black woman to win a Tony Award - for No Strings on Broadway. Most people remember her today for her television work. First, in the groundbreaking Julia in 1968 - the first US TV show centered on a black character and family. Second, in mid-70s she guest starred as Dominique Deveraux in Dynasty - a manipulative powerful woman every bit the equal of Joan Collins character, Alexis.

Florian JANNY - Austrian Ice Hockey Player (1994)
(Shot)

"The slaughter was reportedly sparked when the killer – who split with his ex Nadine Hinterholzer two months before – bumped into her in a restaurant having dinner with her new partner on Saturday night.

Just hours later he stormed round to her family’s home, demanding to speak to her before being turned away by her dad, according to reports.

He then went to fetch his brother’s gun before coming back and beginning his gory rampage at around 4am, police said.

The deranged ex shot the dad, 59, dead as he answered the door again, before heading upstairs and killing her mum Andrea, 51, and brother Kevin, 25, as they slept in their beds.

The killer - named only as Andi E - then climbed over an outdoor balcony to reach a locked second apartment where the 19-year-old and her 24-year-old boyfriend Florian Janny were staying, shooting them as well."

Elijah Cummings

Jan. 18, 1951 – Oct. 17, 2019

US Representative Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, a committee chairman known for his devotion to Baltimore and civil rights and for blunt and passionate speech-making, died of longstanding health problems early Thursday morning, his office said. He was 68 years old.

Cummings was born in 1951 and raised in Baltimore, where he continued to live. Cummings lived in the Madison Park community in Baltimore and was an active member of the New Psalmist Baptist Church. He was married to Maya Rockeymoore Cummings. They had three children.

He was one of seven children of Robert Cummings Sr. and Ruth Elma Cummings, née Cochran, who were South Carolina sharecroppers on land where their ancestors were enslaved. The couple moved to Baltimore in the late 1940s.

As a child, Cummings struggled in elementary school and was assigned to special education courses. However, after showing promise in high school at City College, he won Phi Beta Kappa honors at Howard University in Washington. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law and passed the state bar in 1976.

After graduating from law school, Cummings joined a small Baltimore law firm and later set up his own practice, pooling expenses with two other lawyers. He soon transitioned to his second aspiration as a public servant. His longtime mentor is Larry Gibson, the Baltimore attorney and author who was active in the 1960s civil rights movement.

Cummings practiced law for 19 years, served in the Maryland House of Delegates for 14 years, and the US House of Representatives for 23 years.
