Jerry Herman, who wrote the music and lyrics for hit Broadway shows like Hello, Dolly! and La Cage aux Folles, has died at age 88, The New York Times reports.
The gay composer and two-time Tony Award winner suc
bed to pulmonary complications last week at his home in Miami. He is survived by his partner, real estate broker Terry Marler, and his goddaughters, Jane Dorian and Sarah Haspel.
Herman’s illustrious career included creating 10 Broadway shows and contributing to many more. As The Times noted, the composer wrote in the tradition of Rodgers and Hammerstein, penning optimistic tunes during a period in which his peers were “exploring darker feelings and material.” He’s best known for his work on 1964’s Hello, Dolly! (starring Carol Channing) and 1983’s La Cage aux Folles, both of which scored him Tony Awards for Best Musical.
His accolades don’t stop there: Herman also earned two Grammy Awards for his original music for 1966’s Mame (starring Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur) and Hello, Dolly! and a prestigious Kennedy Center honor in 2010.
“There has been no other music which took our breath away, that made us hum and cheer and respect ourselves more than a majestic Jerry Herman musical,” Dorian told The Associated Press late last Friday.

He had been ill for a while, but this is very sad news - one of the great theater composers. Unfortunately, after AIDS took his partner and many other friends in the 80s and 90s he lost the joy that was underneath so much of his work and he just couldn't go back to the theater.
If you are not familiar, here is one of his best "Time Heals Everything" from Mack & Mable sung by the original Mabel, Bernadette Peters.

Buck HENRY (1930)
US Actor and Screenwriter.
Would you believe that the same man that created the zany spy parody comedy TV show Get Smart in the 1960s also wrote the movie The Graduate? And Heaven Can Wait? And What's Up, Doc? Henry also appeared on Saturday Night Live more than any other host in the 1970s.
