PROBLEMISTA (2024)

Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in NY. As time runs out on his work visa, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country. Imdb

Where to start with this enjoyable but strange movie? It's a bizarre, bonkers, surreal satire, very funny in places and just wierd and quirky in others. It stars Julio Torres (who also wrote & directed) and has a scene stealing performance from the almost unrecognisable co-star Tida Swinton as the nightmarish neurotic Elizabeth.

THE SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE (2016) ... No the trailer, too many spoilers.

In 1961, the UN sends an Irish peacekeeper troop commanded by Commandant Pat Quinlan to Katanga, in Congo, to protect the inhabitants of the mining town of Jadotville in the beginning of a civil war. Meanwhile the UN advisor Dr. Conor Cruise O'Brien launches a military attack named Operation Morthor against the French and Belgian mercenaries. Soon there is a reprisal from the mercenaries and Quinlan and his men are left under siege by a huge number of Katangese and mercenary troops. Imdb

I wanted to free up some space on the USB so watched this again before deleting it. Stars Fionn O'Shea (from Handsome Devil). Also in the cast is Mark Strong; Mikael Persbrandt & Jamie Dornan. The young actor who plays P.J. (Conor Quinlan) is the real-life grandson of the Commandant Pat Quinlan. I enjoyed it as much as the 1st time, a tense gripping true story told very well with well filmed combat scenes.

GLORY (1989)

Robert Gould Shaw leads the U.S. Civil War's first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices from both his own Union Army, and the Confederates. Imdb

Stars Matthew Broderick; Morgan Freeman; Denzel Washington This won many plaudits (and an Oscar for Denzel) but I couldn't get into it. I thought Broderick was miscast as Shaw and parts of the soundtrack were irritating.

FEMME (2023)

Jules, who is targeted in a horrific homophobic attack, destroying his life and career. Some time after that event he encounters Preston, one of his attackers, in a gay sauna. He wants revenge. Imdb

The 2 main leads, the always watcheable George McKay as Preston, the closeted tattooed cockney geeezzza and Nathan Stewart-Jarret as Jules both put in superb performances. Gritty & uncompomising yet at times tender but always pretty tense. Cinematography was good - the lighting especially. A Co-prodution with BBCFilms. Grab a copy if you can.....

....and guess what? you can grab a copy right now, right here

DUST FOR BLOOD (2023)

Cliff, a traveling salesman drowning under the weight of providing for his family and the myth of the American dream, finds himself on a dangerous path after a chance encounter with Ricky, a colleague from a dark past. Imdb

Kit Harrington; Scott McNairy & Josh Lucas star in this gripping film-noir thriller. Performances were great and so was the cinematography the low-key pace was too low key for me and they could have cut maybe 10 mins of the first 30min without loosing anything from the tense set-up.

TOMORROW WAR (2021)

The world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrives from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: 30 years in the future, mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high-school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Chris Pratt). Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.

I saw this last year but took a rewatch before freeing up more space. It's a popcorn sci-fi action movie, fun to watch (if a bit too damn long at 2hr 18min) very unpleasant looking aliens, temporal paradoxes and a silly plot.

CONCRETE UTOPIA (2023)

While no one knows for sure how far the ruins stretch, or what the cause of the earthquake may be, in the heart of Seoul there is only one apartment building left standing. It is called Hwang Gung Apartments. As time passes, outsiders start coming in to Hwang Gung Apartments trying to escape the extreme cold. Before long, the apartment residents are unable to cope with the increasing numbers. Feeling a threat to their very survival, the residents enact a special measure. Imdb

I was pointed to this Korean post apocalyptic-disaster movie as it stars Lee Byung-Hun. It is a well filmed and well acted study into how human nature is affected by cataclysmic events and focuses on the aftermath. Lord Of The Flies meets Eathquake.

REPTILE (2023)

Tom Nichols is a hardened New England detective, unflinching in his pursuit of a case where nothing is as it seems and it begins to dismantle the illusions in his own life. Imdb

I watched this last year but gave a rewatch before freeing up more USB storage. I had forgotten much of the plot, apart from it being a dark intense thriller starting with a murder. It stars Benicio Del Toro; Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone. I think lots of people hated it, finding it too brooding, too intense, too film-noir. Benicio Del Toro is superb.

THE TEARSMITH (2024 Netflix)

Within the walls of the Grave, the orphanage where Nica grew up, a legend has always been told: that of the maker of tears, a mysterious craftsman, guilty of crafting all the fears and anxieties that inhabit the hearts of men. But at seventeen years old, the time has come for Nica to leave fairy tales behind. Her biggest dream is about to come true. Mr and Mrs Milligan have started the adoption process and are ready to give her the family she has always wanted. In her new home, however, Nica is not alone. Along with her, Rigel, a restless and mysterious orphan, the last person in the world Nica would want as an adoptive brother, is also taken from the Grave. Rigel is intelligent, smart, plays the piano like an enchanting demon and has a beauty that can enchant, but his angelic appearance conceals a dark nature. Even though Nica and Rigel are united by a common past of pain and hardship, living together seems impossible, but kindness and anger are two different ways of fighting pain to stay alive and to conceal the emotions that devastate their hearts, becoming for each other that tears-maker of legend. To the maker of tears you cannot lie: and they will have to find the courage to accept that desperate force that attract them towards each other called love. (IMDb)

Many haters many lovers - we are counted among the last group. For us it was a wonderful love story - perhaps a little bit overdone - but aren't love-stories always "overdone"?! If you are the romantic type you should watch it but if you like Sci-Fi or Action: Hands off!!!!!

THE COST (2022)

Intent on dispensing their own brutal form of justice, two ordinary men abduct a felon who committed a horrific crime many years before. Imdb

This low budget Australian movie graps you from the beginning, when we are introduced to the 3 main charaters and keeps the tension going all the way through, helped by an atmospheric soundtrack.
