Of course? You say that like it's a natural assumption? Like you have no choice in the matter? Like Microsoft have some sort of God-given right to you money?

Not the way I read that, Bart - to me, he's simply saying that it's natural for him to be exclusively on a PC rather than a Mac. I didn't get that his phraseology implied anything else - other than that his choice was natural for him. Gee, is your Mac evangelism showing?

For the record, both types of computers and OS have their strong points and limitations. If I have to do audio or video editing (a side gig that I sometimes do) it has to be on a Mac (used to use a Sun Sparc workstation running Solaris). PC's just don't cut it for real pro work in that line. However, for statistical number crunching, a PC stands head and shoulders above Macs for the various software written specifically for those jobs, and native to the PC.

Mac, it's required for my major, and to be honest, I prefer it as much as a pc now.

I Totally :agree: with you my dear :heart:ly sweet:heart: Loveless92:heart: I  all Mac Computers, Apple always makes great wonderful products specially the magical IPad i cannot wait to get my hands on the new IPad 2 been waiting for over a year now:), and to be honest my friend i do miss using a PC also.

Nope - no Mac evangelism showing here - just anti-monopoly evangelism. I really don't care what OS people choose to use, just as long as they realise they actually do have a choice. And it's not just a choice between Windows and Mac, those are in a way very similar choices, both commercial software, people also have the choice to go free and open source. If all you do is surf the web, read email, and watch porn, there's no earthly reason to give either company your money - just get Ubuntu Linux and off you go!

Both? That's not a fair representation of people's choice either - though I grant you that Open Solaris hasn't been the hit Sun wanted it to be - and now even Sun themselves are gone :(

Anyhow - your points about software defining the reason to choose one platform over the other were once very true, but are now mostly, though not completely irrelevant. If you're into pro photo of video or audio you can use either of the commercial OSes. Adobe's pro-suite of apps is cross platform. You can argue that if you go Mac as a pro you double your options, on Windows it's mostly Adobe or bust, while on Mac you can choose between the Adobe suite and Apple's pro apps, but you can be a video pro or a graphics pro or a photo pro on a PC without it being a crippling inconvenience. The same is also true the other way. When it comes to stats SPSS is king, and it will run on Linux as well as Mac, so you have even more choices there than in the creative sphere! Office 11 was released for PC and Mac at the same time with the same features - so that's no different.

In short - it used to be true that software forced you to choose an OS - very much a case of the tail wagging the dog IMO, those days are thankfully history. You can choose your OS based on your preferences, and then get the software you need to get what ever you need to do done!

It was also true in the past that Apple machines were somewhat under powered with their PPC chips, but since Apple made the switch to Intel over 5 years ago, there is no hardware difference at all. Windows, Linux, Mac, heck, even Solaris, all run on Intel architectures now.

Finally - now that so much of our software is web-based, you have even more choice in which OS to use. It really doesn't matter what you use for so many things now, as long as it has a browser!

In short - we've never been this free, and it saddens me to see people ignore that freedom and continue to slavishly fork over cash to Microsoft without even thinking about whether or not they're happy with what that money buys them.

Bart.

As pointed out by gb2000 and others, there are really two issues here: choice of computer hardware, and choice of operating system.

It really annoys me when I tell people I use a PC and they say "Oh I much prefer a Mac, I hate Windows."; they assume just because I use a PC, that I run Windows.

Microsoft lost a lot of respect by their attempt to corner the browser market by bundling Internet Explorer with their operating system in an attempt to force Netscape out of the market. Microsoft eventually lost the legal battle, but the resolution took so long that they basically got what they wanted - by the time the decision was handed down, Netscape was fucked anyway. That has left a nasty taste in many users' mouths, and explains why so many of them have chosen to adopt the free open-source Firefox (even if they run Windows OS).

You do indeed make a great point! Did you know that a Mac Laptop was voted the Best Windows Vista PC by PCMag a few years ago? How's that for a head-scratcher!

If you buy generic PC hardware you can run Linux, Windows or most Unixes, if you buy Mac hardware you can run Windows, Mac, Linux and many Unixes. In the days before Apple switched to Intel you really had no choice but to give up on Windows if you liked Apple's hardware design, now, you're much freer to mix and match.

This brings me to a pet peeve of mine - laptops that are not made to stand real-world use. I think it's an insult to users that some companies feel it's OK to take people's money for shoddy plastic laptops that creak and groan and come apart in no time at all. How many times have you seen loose hinges on plastic laptops? Too bloody many! A portable computer needs to be built well enough to be lugged around for 3 years, if it comes apart sooner it was a hunk of junk. By that metric - the following companies have supplied me with junk laptops (most of which fell apart LONG before 3 years) Dell, Gateway, Fujitsu-Siemens, and some off-brand head of junk I thankfully didn't have to pay for. From what I can tell - there are only 2 companies that make proper, solid, durable laptops - Lenovo (and before them IBM), and Apple. The Think Pads are fantastic machines, and Apple hardware is bloody durable! My MacBook Pro is 6 years old - it looks like new, works perfectly, and has never had anything more dramatic done to it than had it's battery replace, and an extra stick of RAM added. PC users still compliment me on my nice new laptop! That thing has gone pretty much everywhere I've gone for the past 6 years - it's always either on my desk or in my backpack, and I go almost nowhere without my backpack!

Linux ( Debian at home and Ubuntu on notebook and netbook)

Mac hardware is overpriced and OSX is over-rated. Windows sucks. I use UBUNTU, have for several years now. I've yet to find anything I want to do that I cant do with it, it is free, tons of community support, fast, resource efficient, better security, little worries about viruses and malware, and at least as easy to learn as windows or mac.

I use PC. I'm comfortable with it after many tears of use since my first computer was a IBM PC with 40K memory (yes forty thousand). Does that give away my age?

Still PC, but I am thinking to became Mac.

PC at work (XP)
PC at home (7)
tablet/notebook PC at leisure (7)
and an ipod touch

Pc unfortunately, though I'd get used to some alternative system :blushing:
