Aaah... are the games over? Well, wasn't that fun. :p

"Lies, damn lies, statistics". I forgot who said it and I'm too lazy to look it up, but maybe we can find a common ground on that.

You noticed the final "jk :)", didn't you?

Anyway, this was indeed leading very, very far from just yes or no. Oh, and even when it seemed to get personal, it wasn't meant like that. I just believe in clarity. Which sometimes sounds abrasive. I hope I didn't hurt your feelings (damn)...

Thanks for the links, but indeed the main reason I came here was for the scrumptiousness, but hey, while downloading I stumbled on this thread.

I'll give the 'serious' thread a look over.

Still, I keep wondering. God knows, you write. How do you know what she knows? ;)

But how can there be proof in relation to the origin of all things -of matter, substance, etc.? To expect proof, to put everything into neat little boxes etc., and disregard anything that does not fit, or is beyond us, it is to be a control freak. In truth human beings are very limited --to think that we can map out everything, all existence, it is a bit on the egotistical side. Scientist cannot tell people that god does exist, but neither can they decide he does not. It is personal matter. Religions should not dictate what God is to a person, and neither should scientists purport to know it all. In truth life is a mystery... and it will always be a mystery. Anyone who claims to have solved it, or to be 'on the way' to solving it, they are egotistical perhaps? We are all here, on a speck of interstellar dust hurtling through space... and the truth is... we just don't know!

"Anyone who claims to have solved it, or to be 'on the way' to solving it, they are egotistical perhaps? "

But is this not the perfect argument against belief in gods? I mean to fancy that humans from their meager position can claim that they have knowledge of beings the magnitude of gods is a bit egotistical.

We are, in turth, ignorant and therefor in no position to draw any respectable conclusions about the ultimate nature of existence. We can not truthfully say there are actual gods. All we can really say about gods, as our current perception allows us to, is that gods are subjective apparitions; and that is what they will remain until we have actual comprehensible evidence that gods are more.

FOr some strange reason i a though came into my head. What if the creator of the universe was but a mere catalyst in a systematic mechanism :))!

Every one of us is like a man who sees
things in a dream and thinks that he
knows them perfectly and then wakes
up to find that he knows nothing.

Aristotelian conceptions of soul and active intellect are actually central to Roman Catholic Theology. Many of the great Catholic scholars choose to focus/elaborate on the works of Aristotle --perhaps Plato was too controversial for them?

But hey! If you want to go about quoting Aristotle, it's fine by me, but shhh... don't let any of the other atheists in your gang find out!

My gang? My gang? I would so love to have my own gang :)) Like so many things, organized Atheism is a figment of your imagination. ;)

So, your mob can't get enough of antique books I understand? :p

"It is too late in the day for men of sincerity to pretend they believe in the Platonic mysticisms that three are one, and one is three; and yet that the one is not three, and the three are not one. But this constitutes the craft, the power and the profit of the priests."

~ Thomas Jefferson, third President of US, to John Adams, second President of the US, 1803

If atheists don't believe in a God, or "supreme being", than why do so many celebrate Christmas???? And don't anyone feed me a line of BS saying that the are very much into commercialism, and they are just doing their part to spur the worlds economies!!
And since we are done with the just yes or no answer to the God question, I will chime in for a bit to bore you all to death.
This is why "I" believe there has to be a God or supreme being. You can go ahead and tear apart my thoughts and ideas, but they are still mine and you won't change them.

1) The order of the universe.
I cannot believe that all this was created by chance. Millions of galaxies, suns, planets, moons etc. orbiting around with hardly any instance that we know of, of them spiraling out of control and crashing into each other. From what we can tell, everything seems to have a set path, but by Who?

2) Earth and life.
I can't believe it was just chance creating this planet to support the life forms we know. What are the chances of that. What catalyst made it happen.

3) Conscience.
Why did we develop a conscience to know right from wrong. How is it that we have free will to choose. Does an animal in the wild feel guilty killing for food. NO. Why do we. What gave us consciousness? Chance. I don't think so.

4) Intricacies of humans.
Look at how our bodies work, lungs, heart, brain, etc. Can this be explained by chance?
And if so, what put that little knowledge in every life from to know they must procreate to continue the species?

5) Belief in God.
In general, throughout time, every group of people have worshiped a higher power. Whether it was a sun, or animal, or person.
How could every group, or tribe, or civilization all be wrong?

I could go on and on here. But maybe tomorrow. It's really getting late.

But before I go the last undeniable reason...
I saw him on TV.

Because everybody likes a good party, no matter what the pretext is. ;)

1) The order of the universe.

You are just creating a new problem. If there is a supreme being, who created her? Or it. Or he. Since the universe couldn't have evolved spontaneously, flawed as it is, according to your beliefs, it is far much harder to believe that a supreme being came into existence without someone creating it. So who? Or what? And why?

2) Earth and life.

Evolution.

3) Conscience.

Does an animal in the wild feel guilty killing for food. NO. Why do we.

Most of us don't. We slaughter millions of animals just because we find them tasty. We breed them with the express goal to kill and eat them. We could survive on a vegetarian diet. It would be more economical. It is probably more healthy. Yet we don't. Most people enjoy their steak without feeling guilty in the least.

4) Intricacies of humans.

Can this be explained by chance?

Totally. It is hard to explain otherwise why we are constructed so badly. A 7,-- € webcam has a better lens than the human eye. We have remnants in our bodies of experiments like gills and so on. We are completely what you would expect if we evolved without a designer, haphazardly, under the influence of circumstances. Again: evolution.

5) Belief in God.
In general, throughout time, every group of people have worshiped a higher power. Whether it was a sun, or animal, or person.
How could every group, or tribe, or civilization all be wrong?

No, in all times there have been intellectuals who doubted the existence of gods. Sometimes they kept silent out of fear of being tortured and burned at the stake by christians.

People have worshiped thunder, volcanoes, springs, the Nile, the sun, the moon. Were they wrong? Yes. Were they wrong to see them as a higher power? Yes. They are natural phenomenons and can be explained with enough knowledge. In some cases we have yet to acquire sufficient knowledge, in others not.

People have worshiped strange creatures with animal heads, other humans they were impressed by, invisible beings. Were they wrong to see them as an higher power? Yes. They are made up and there is no evidence for their divine powers.

For a long time everybody believed the earth was flat. They were all wrong. The whole world population of the time. Then they thought the earth was the center of the universe. Again, the whole world population was wrong.

Let me end with a few quotes:

"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful."
~ Napoleon

"All thinking men are atheists."
~ Ernest Hemingway

“This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it”
--John Adams, third President of the US
