In 1898, one of the greatest Spanish poets and dramatists of our age, Garcia Lorca was born. He is the second most studied Spanish writer after Cervantes. Federico Garcia Lorca’s contribution to Spanish literature is exceptional; both his poetry and plays continue to have a significant impact on new generations of writers and readers all over the world. Some of his most famous books are Canciones (1927), Cancionero gitano (1928), Sonetos del amor oscuro (1936), Poeta en Nueva York (1940), El público (1930), Bodas de sangre (1932), and La casa de Bernarda Alba (1936).

In 1944, Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower gives the go-ahead for largest amphibious military operation in history: Operation Overlord, code named D-Day, the Allied invasion of northern France.

The D-Day invasion has been the basis for several movies, from 'The Longest Day' (1962), which boasted an all-star cast that included Richard Burton, Sean Connery, John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and Fabian, to 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998), which includes some of the most grippingly realistic war scenes ever filmed, captured in the style of the famous Robert Capa still photos of the actual invasion.

A little late to the party but yesterday June 8th 1968 Robert F Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery After being assassinated at the ambassador hotel after winning a primary. I had the opportunity to actually go into the pantry where he was shot. I was shocked at how small a space it really was and of course I got goosebumps.

Dear gorgik, there was an unpleasant disagreement. Sorry. ;) Katekizem and Abecednik (The Catechism and Abecedary) were the first two books WRITTEN & PRINTED in Slovene.

The first writings in the Slovenian language date back to the turn of the first millennium CE., the so-called ''Freising Manuscripts'' written in Carolingian minuscule, which are actually kept in the Bavarian State Archives in Munich.

Primoz Trubar is one of the most important pillars of Slovenia's cultural and national identity, and thus a figure who has inspired the following generations to take an active stand in preserving and promoting Slovenian language.

Excommunicated from the Catholic Church, Protestant reformer Primoz Trubar (1508-1586) moved to Germany in 1547. He subsequently wrote the first two Slovene books, Catechismus and Abecedarium, at Rothenburg and had them printed in 1550 at Tuebingen. Abecedarium, a reading primer that was published as an 8-page supplement to the Catechismus, was to help ''Lubi Slovenci inu bratje'' (Dear Slovenes and brothers), as Trubar addressed the readers in the preface to the Catechismus, using, for the first time in history, the word Slovenes, to learn how to read.

He is one of the most important pillars of Slovenia's cultural and national identity, and thus a figure who has inspired the following generations to take an active stand in preserving and promoting Slovenian language.

The Protestants published over 50 books in Slovene, including the first Slovenian grammar and, in 1584, Dalmatin’s translation of the Bible.

The 23,000 people who attended Estadio de Nuevo Elche and paid 800 pesetas for a ticket -“ about £27 in today's money -“ could never have guessed that they were going to watch an historic game.

Today, 'Bloomsday' is celebrated by Joyceans across the globe with readings, performances, re-enactments, and a host of other events. In Dublin, enthusiasts dress in Edwardian costume and gather during the day at many of the locations where episodes of Ulysses take place. The James Joyce Centre hosts Bloomsday breakfasts (including kidney, which Mr. Bloom eats for breakfast in the novel) and other events in the run up to June 16 as well as on the day.

In 1949, Meryl Streep was born in Summit, New Jersey. She began her career on the New York stage in the late 1960s and appeared in several Broadway productions. She began appearing in films in the 1970s, and soon began earning both nominations and awards. Equally able to wow audiences in drama, comedy, and musicals, she has come to be considered one of the greatest actresses of our time.

IMHO, she's probably the best actress who ever worked in Hollywood it's a wonder she's only won three Oscars. :p

In 2012, Queen Elizabeth and Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Martin McGuiness passed another peace process milestone when they held their first private, “positive” and “substantive” one-to-one meeting. The former IRA leader spoke with the British monarch for some 15 minutes after she arrived at Hillsborough Castle for the start of her 21st visit to Northern Ireland. She was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip. And while the IRA was responsible for the 1979 murder of Prince Philip’s uncle Lord Mountbatten the Sinn Fein leader said that the killing did not arise over the course of their conversation.
