25 years on from Dunblane

The Dunblane massacre took place at Dunblane Primary School near Stirling, Scotland, United Kingdom on 13 March 1996 when Thomas Hamilton entered the gym, shot dead sixteen pupils (aged 5 and 6) one teacher, injured fifteen others, before killing himself. It remains the deadliest mass shooting in British history. It was determined later that he entered the school with 4 handguns and 743 rounds of ammunition of which he fired 105. From the first to last shot took under 5 minutes.

One 9 yrs old, a Dunblane resident who was at school that day went on to make a career out of tennis - Andy Murray

This is a real story. In April 5 1930 Baird recieved a letter from the great Ramsay MacDonald giving thanks for the gift. There was not much to watch in those days, a man playing the violin and a woman reading poetry was as exciting as it got. If Baird had known that his invention would one day be used for showing Celebrity Love Island, he might never have bothered.

The reason I thought it might be a prank was that I got horribly fooled by haiducii in one of his posts in another thread...

But you know, I love the great GH prankster anyway, always!!! :big hug:

I think the Germans established a big concentration camp in Yugoslavia that became infamous for its extreme brutality.

Wasn't the name of this camp Jasenovac or something like that???

You're right! Jasenovac was a concentration and extermination camp (one of the ten largest in Europe) established in Slavonia, Croatia by the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) in occupied Yugoslavia during World War II.

May 3 1960

On this date in 1960 the musical The Fantasticks opened Off-Broadway in New York and ran for 17,162 performances - longer than any other musical in history. It starred a young unknown actor named Jerry Orbach opening the show by singing "Try to Remember". In the clip below he revisits that song nearly 20 years later on TV.

In 1996, The Spice Girls released their debut single "Wannabe". An upbeat and empowering track soared to the top of music charts around the world. The song was released in the United States in January 1997, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from music critics, the song won for British Single of the Year at the 1997 Brit Awards. "Wannabe" became the best-selling single by a girl group in the world. In a 2014 study, it was chosen as the most easily recognisable pop song of the last 60 years

To mark the occasion, the band has previously announced they would release a limited edition "Wannabe25" EP on Friday, including the original track, the original demo recording, a remix and a demo of previously unreleased ballad "Feed Your Love".

Donkey Kong was released as an arcade video game by Nintendo in Japan on July 9, 1981, then in North America later that month and Europe later that year. Its gameplay maneuvers Mario across platforms to ascend a construction site and rescue Pauline from the giant gorilla named Donkey Kong, all while avoiding or jumping over obstacles.

Donkey Kong was the product of Nintendo's increasingly desperate efforts to develop a hit to rival Pac-Man (1980) and break into the North American market. Hiroshi Yamauchi, Nintendo's president at the time, assigned the project to first-time video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto who drew from a wide range of inspirations including Popeye, Beauty and the Beast, and King Kong.

In 1991, Freddie Mercury passed away at his Kensington home, Garden Lodge, aged 45 from bronchial pneumonia due to AIDS-related complications. A prolific songwriter, arranger and music producer, a consummate theatrical entertainer and one of the 20th century’s best-known lead singers, Mercury fronted Queen from 1970 until his death in 1991.

It’s 30 years since Freddie Mercury died. His music is still the soundtrack of our lives.

In 1989, MTV aired the first episode of 'MTV Unplugged'. The music show aired regularly between 1989 and 1999.

The series would eventually feature many classic episodes and recordings, such as four years later with the November 18, 1993 show featuring Nirvana.

But back in 1989, the show had not established a reputation so the performers on the first episode were not superstars. The show featured Squeeze, Syd Straw, Elliot Easton (of the Cars), and Jules Shear.
