Now you've set me off, I'm going to have to watch all of those classic shorts again. It is time well spent. Never mind Gone With The Wind or The Wizard Of Oz, for my money T&J is Hollywood's alltime greatest creation. Up until 1958 the toon was not aimed at children, it was made for an adult cinema audience. Only when it became popular on TV did it change to a kids show. That explains why more recent episode are so bland compared to the pre TV era. If I had to take just one scene to use as proof of the creative genius of the T&J team it is this;

The dancing banana !That is exactly how a banana would dance if it could. Good animation makes the impossible believable. Animation does not get any better than this.

Stevie is like Paul McCartney in that respect, he made so many great records and yet there a few that just stink. We can forgive him those few mistakes when the good records were so magical.
My favourite goes back a long way, this is just so I have an excuse to tell you this story. At the time when they were recording Uptight, Berry Gordy, the Motown boss was thinking of dumping Stevie. Can you believe that the studio had such a surplus of talent at the time that they could think of letting go of such a star?
The studio band loved little Stevie and were determined to change Berry's mind. For every record they played at 110%, for this recording it must have been 170% at least. The boy genius was fighting to save his career, you can hear it in the energy that comes leaping out of the grooves.

Hope we get the chance to celebrate his 80th one day.

In 1940, the King of Football Pelé was born in Tres Corazones, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Pelé is the only man in history to have won three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970). He is also the top scorer in the history of the Brazilian national team with 77 goals in 92 appearances. He played his final game for the national team in 1971 against Yugoslavia in Rio de Janeiro.

Happy Birthday, Pelé!

Yes truly: Happy Birthday, Pelé!!!

He was just a teenager when he won his first World Cup in 1958, and this happened in Sweden, hosting the 1958 Cup. We (Sweden) had a spectacular national football team in the 1950's and managed to get to the final - against Brazil!!! Did we stand a chance against Pelé and his team mates? Na, not really, but the Swedes made an effort and made two goals. Brazil, though, made four, so the result was Brazil 4, Sweden 2.

I do think it's fair to say, that Swedish football fans learned to love and admire Brazilian football. And you bet that Pelé got lots of Swedish fans!!!

Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes

NASA's space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff at about 46,000 feet in the air, killing the entire crew. The cause was later determined to be the extremely cold temperatures had caused a crack in one of the rubber O-rings that seal the solid booster rockets on the sides. That crack allowed a small flame to seep out which acted as a blow-torch pointed at the outer seal of the main fuel tank. Once it burned through the outer shell, the entire main center fuel tank exploded, destroying the rockets and the shuttle.

The accident stopped the Space Shuttle program in its tracks and had a profound effect on NASA culture - one that is felt to this day.

One of the astronauts on board was Christie McAuliffe (pictured above left), a teacher that was going to live broadcast to schoolchildren around the world during the mission. Because of that many schools stopped classes that day to let students watch the launch.

The Super Bowl football game is being played tomorrow in the US. It reminds me that 30 years ago in 1991, shortly after the start of the Gulf War, Whitney Houston belted out her iconic rendition of the US National Anthem - "The Star Spangled Banner".

The unique arrangement was the idea of Whitney's pianist (and later American Idol and Tonight Show band leader), Ricky Minor. He changed the tempo from the traditional lilting waltz, to a blues/gospel 4/4 - with lots of space for Whitney to breathe and soar.

Whitney, who was known for high fashion and dressing up for concerts, instead dressed down. She looked more like a soccer mom heading off to choir practice. But the effect in both the arrangement and her wardrobe was to remove the focus from her, and place it on the familiar melody and lyric. Without a lot of vocal embellishment (until the very end), Whitney made it all look so easy.

It's seeing and remembering performances like this that make me miss her so much and what she could have given us.

Share the same thoughts.

No auto-tune, no earpiece, just a mic. That's all Whitney needed to showcase her voice in the purest form. The best female voice of the history.

R.I.P Miss Whitney

In 2020, was the last time I went to a concert. The English rock band Editors were playing their greatest hits in Zagreb, Croatia. Oh, how I miss such things during this crisis. :(
