RRR a.k.a. RISE ROAR REVOLT (2022)

During the British era, Malli, a small tribal girl, is taken away by British governor Scott Buxton and his wife Catherine against the wishes of her mother. The British government find that a tribal Komaram Bheem has started his search for her and could be an obstacle for the British army. Rama Raju, a ruthless Indian cop never given his due by the british promises to bring him in dead or alive. Bheem by now has reached he city in search of Malli and pretends to be a mechanic, Akhtar. During a train accident on a bridge over a lake he and Rama Raju risk their lives and save a kid and become best of friends without either realising who the other is..... But each man will clash with the other and will thirst for each other's blood in order to complete their missions. (Imdb)

So I had 3hrs and 6 mins to spare this evening and fancied an action; comedy; bro-mance melodrama with a totally insane over-the-top plot, a great soundtrack and some big song & dance numbers. And then add in some amazing editing and cinematography...... plus tigers and leopards! So naturally the ONLY movie that was gonna tick all those boxes was a re-watch of RRR.

FINESTKIND (2023)

A crew of fishermen tread dangerous waters when their debts start piling up. Imdb

Great performances from the 2 leads, Ben Foster; Toby Wallace and a smaller role from the always watchable Tommy Lee Jones in this drama about family bonds. I enjoyed the 1st half more than the 2nd when the plot got a little stretched.

FREEDOM'S PATH (2022)

no trailer due to actor age but this featurette will give you a feel for the movie

After a Union soldier flees from battle, rescue comes from a free black man operating a section of the Underground Railroad. But when a ruthless slave catcher discovers the secret network, he conspires to bring it burning to the ground. Imdb

I really enjoyed this movie even though the pacing slowed just a little for a short period mid-film. The cinematography & editing was great and the beautiful haunting soundtrack complemented this powerful story well told. The cast were excellent, particularly the 2 main leads - Gerran Howell & RJ Cyler. Ewan Bremner also stars (I only realised it was Ewen Bremner when the end credits came up!) Highly recommended.... if you can track it down.

THE FATHER (2020)

I'm deliberately not posting a trailer as I think it's better not to see anything before watching the movie.

A man refuses all assistance from his daughter as he ages. As he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality. Imdb

This is a harrowing & powerful tale about aging; memory loss & dementia. Sir Anthony Hopkins won the Best Actor Oscar for his utterly superb portrayal of Andrew and he is ably supported by Olivia Coleman; Rufus Sewell; Mark Gatiss and Olivia Williams who are all excellent. It's an emotional, beautifully crafted, disorientating, heartbreaking, unsettling tough watch of a movie.... but even so (& also because of that) highly recommended!

SALTBURN (2023)

Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family's sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.
(IMDb)

A very controversial discussed film, with a great twist! You may like or hate this movie and there are many things to hate it - but nonetheless why not watch such a controversial film. Try it. I would be very interested what have been your opinions!

Happy Christmas
(No spoilers) I thought it was compelling viewing. I found it intriguing, etotic and confounding! Overall it was unsettling, although no regrets.

THE HARDER THEY FALL (2021)

When an outlaw discovers his enemy is being released from prison, he reunites his gang to seek revenge.Imdb

I watched this a few months back but having spotted that one of the cast is RJ Cyler (who was superb in FREEDOM'S PATH - see #12,744) I decided to give it anoter screening and it's just as much fun as before. It's one of the "new breed" of (at times) very bloody violent westerns with a predominatly black cast: Idris Elba; Johnathan Majors; Zazie Beetz; LaKieth Stanfield and Regina King. It's got great cinematography/editing giving it a stylish sassy vibe. Even the soundtrack features the likes of Jay-Z; Lauren Hill and some banging dub reggae from Barrington Levy and Dennis Brown

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022)

With her laundromat teetering on the brink of failure and her marriage to wimpy husband Waymond on the rocks, overworked Evelyn Wang struggles to cope with everything, including tattered relationships with her judgmental father Gong Gong and her daughter Joy. She must also brace herself for an unpleasant meeting with an impersonal bureaucrat: Deirdre, the shabbily-dressed IRS auditor. However, as the stern agent loses patience, an inexplicable multiverse rift becomes an eye-opening exploration of parallel realities. Will Evelyn jump down the rabbit hole? How many stars are in the universe? Can weary Evelyn fathom the irrepressible force of possibilities, tap into newfound powers, and prevent an evil entity from destroying the thin, countless layers of the unseen world? Imdb

It being New Years Eve I didn't want to risk choosing a new movie only to find it turns out to be a dud so I went for a favourite that I knew would entertain. And wow does this entertain! A really great script coupled with excellent soundtrack; editing; and cinematic production and the main cast, including Michelle Yeoh; Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis are all good. If you still haven't seen this grab a copy and strap in for the 2hr 20min emotional rollercoaster ride!

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN (2022)

Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them. Imdb

So for New Years Day another re-watch of a favouriite. This dark bittersweet drama with some very funny moments is a joy. Beautifully filmed in some rugged and gorgeuos locations in the west of Ireland and the Island of Inishmore with a sharp script and the 4 leads - Colin Farrel; Brendan Gleeson; Kerry Condon & Barry Keoghan are all excellent.

BEAST (2022)

A father and his two teenage daughters find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the Savanna has but one apex predator. Imdb

I have had a copy of this for ages but kept in my 3rd division folder 'cos I thought it might turn out to be "Jaws but with a Lion". Well it's definirely 3rd division - utter rubbish, it stars Idris Elba but that can't save it. Some of the CGI is terrible and as for the plot it's unbelievably stupid/silly. So this huge lion attacks the landrover that they are sightseeing in and they are all scared and scream etc but afterwards one the daughters gets out of the vehicle and walks off to look for Uncle Mark - that's how unbelievabley stupid.

SCRAPPER (2023)

Georgie, a dreamy 12-year-old girl, lives happily alone in her London flat, filling it with magic. Suddenly, her estranged father turns up and forces her to confront reality. Imdb

I was signposted to this as it stars Harris Dickenson. It has got lots of positive reviews but I couldn't get into it and found it a bit boring.

LET THE WRONG ONE IN (2021)

A young supermarket worker discovers that his older brother is a vampire and must choose whether to help him or slay him. Imdb

This Irish comedy/gore-horror/drama popped up on a free UK streaming service so I thought I'd give it a go. It's very silly & very dumb but it's meant to be that way, It doesn't take itself seriously at all - it even has Anthony Head (from Buffy) as a vampire slayer!

STRAYS (2023)

Young dog Reggie lives in the home of Doug, an angry and vile man who hates his pet and does everything he can to get rid of him. When Reggie becomes homeless he meets Bug, an experienced street dog who is ready to become his new friend's guide through the world of dogs surviving without human support. Imdb

This animal action comedy is okay. Very crude humour, very sweary dogs - voiced by such as Will Ferrell & Jamie Foxx

SECRET DEFENSE - a French film from 2008

In France, terrorist groups and intelligence agencies battle in a merciless war everyday, in the name of radically opposed ideologies. Yet, terrorist and secret agents lead almost the same lives. Condemned to secrecy, these masters of manipulation follow the same methods. Alex and Al Barad are two of them. The former is the head of the D.G.S.E.'s (Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure, the French equivalent of the CIA or the MI6) counter-terrorism unit while the latter reigns over a terrorist network, and both fight using the most ruthless of weapons: human beings. Secret Défense (aka Secrets Of State) tells of their secret war through the destinies of Diane, a student recruited by the French secret service, and Pierre, a troubled young man who thinks terrorism will bring him salvation. Trained and indoctrinated for missions which are beyond them, they are both drawn into a chain of events from which they seem incapable of escaping. While they both be sacrificed in the name of their "noble" causes? (IMDb)

A very, very good French film with high voltage! If you like films of this genre - this is a must-see! Very recommended!

THE BURIAL (2023)

Inspired by true events, a lawyer helps a funeral home owner save his family business from a corporate behemoth, exposing a complex web of race, power, and injustice. Imdb

My thanks to Shelter who gave this the thumbs-up a while ago. So this sounds like it will be a rather dry procedural court drama but it is much more entertaining than that. If I see that a film stars Tommy Lee Jones I know I will be worth watching and that is the case but also Jamie Foxx is superb - possibly one of his best ever performamces?

BEASTS CLAWING AT STRAWS (2020)

A cleaner forced to care for his ailing mother, finds a huge bag of money left in a sauna. Unknown to him that the story behind the bag has a custom officer in debt, a loan shark, a scammer, an escort with an abusive husband and an illegal immigrant, all these characters cross paths and get themselves into increasingly deeper trouble as they attempt to cheat their way towards the ultimate payout. Imdb

This Korean movie popped up on the All4 streamer here in the UK. It got favourable reviews but I gave up after about 45/50mins. I just couldn't make sense of or follow the various plots

THE GREAT ESCAPER (2023)

Bernard Jordan escapes from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France. Imdb

Based on a true story this is a heartwarming charming bittersweet feel-good highly emotional tearjerker of a movie. It has a few flaws in terms of the script/plot and direction but these are more than countered by the fact that Bernie is played by 90yrs old Michael Caine and his wife Irene is 87yr old Glenda Jackson (in her last film) and they are both absolutely superb.
