BODIES (2023)

Four detectives, living in different eras -1890, 1941, 2023 and 2053 - find the body of the same murder victim in Whitechapel. London. They soon come to realize their investigations have them central to a conspiracy spanning over 150 years. Imdb

Any plot involving time shifts has problems with temporal paradoxes and holes in the plot and so does this one BUT the script is really good. the cast are excellent and the pacing overall keeps you gripped pretty much from start to finish. I thought early on I could see how this was going to play out - but I was wrong. A few twists and turns and a few WTF? moments kept me watching.

GIRI/HAJI... (DUTY/SHAME) (2019)

A detective from Tokyo scours London for his missing brother, who's been involved with the Yakuza and accused of murder. Imdb

I happened upon this BBC/Netflix series by accident - a happy accident. At the end of Ep. 1 I thought I would watch one more episode then maybe give the rest a miss. I thought I was on top of the plot; why someone was acting the way they were; who was the person we only saw from behind watching others etc. By the end of Ep 2 I realised I was wrong about nearly everything and was now fully gripped - so gripped that the plans to watch a movie were ditched and I watched Ep.3, but that ended with a cracking cliff-hanger to the plot that I had to watch Ep. 4 straightaway.

It's really well written and filmed with a stellar cast and even some anime sections. The plot switches between London and Tokyo and present day and flashbacks; with feuding Yakuza gangs and East End gangsters; a gay rent-boy and detectives and cops on their trail. Well paced as with each episode more is revealed answering the wtf? from previous episodes.

The dialogue is in English & Japanese. The one I have has hard-coded english subtitles for the Japanese

4 episodes down - 4 more to go.

I watched Ep 5 yesterday afternoon so that it would leave me with a 3 hr binge to finish tonight.... Wow, the action and tension just kept going with more jaw-dropping moments and surreal sequences. Some laughs and wonderfully bittersweet moments ones too As with the early episodes you think you know how the plot will go and then BAM - it does a 90 or 180 degree switch.

Highly highly recommended.

GANGS OF LONDON (2020-2005)

Tells the story of London being torn apart by the turbulent power struggles of its international gangs and the sudden power vacuum that's created when the head of London's most powerful crime family is assassinated. Imdb

I came to this late via one of those " If you liked that you might like this...."This show was created by Gareth Evans - the guy who created the two RAID movies and his "flair" for very close-up graphic relentless brutal bloody violence carries on here. Joe Cole stars as Sean Wallace, the son of the recently murdered Finn Wallace and as powerplays and double-crossing between the various gangs play out Sean tries to work out who killed his father.... Was it the Albanians? The Turks? The Kurdistanis? The Irish? The Dumani family? The Pakistanis? The Nigerians? other drug dealing outfits or even mercenaries......... who can he trust? Who should he trust?

Is it gripping and addictive? Well I binge watched all 9 episodes in Season 1 in the last 3 days and already have Seasons 2 and 3 saved on the USB for next month.

WONDER MAN (2026 - )

Small-time actor Simon Williams struggles to reckon with his personal life while hiding his super-powers as he tries to land his dream role. Meanwhile, a shady government agent leverages a new friendship in order to save his own job. Imdb

Although I haven't liked most if the Marvel TV series as this one is partly about actor Trevor Slattery, Ben Kinsley's character from the Iron Man movies I thought I would give it a try....... I gave up during Ep. 3

GANGS OF LONDON (2020-2005)

A new gang is running London but not everyone is happy, and so a rebellion brews. Imdb

The mayhem and gratuitous, bloody and close-up violence is back. As before the plot twists and turns as alliances break due either deaths or double-crossing. I have binge watched the 8 episodes over the last few days... Season 3 is on the USB. How long can I tease myself before going for it?

GANGS OF LONDON (2020-2005)

I binged all 8 episodes. The brutality, mayhem and high octane action continues. More betrayal & back-stabbing; more death and destruction; more bruising fistfights and exuberant shootouts. They have even thought up even more grisly ways to die. In terms of plot we get several flashbacks which begin to explain the betrayals and plot twists.

Really a great show. High-voltage!

THE BLACKLIST (2013 - )

A new FBI profiler, Elizabeth Keen, has her entire life uprooted when a mysterious criminal, Raymond Reddington, who has eluded capture for decades, turns himself in and insists on speaking only to her. Imdb

I had seen several clips from this show on YTube and it looked interesting and recently Channel4 here in the UK uploaded all 8 seasons onto its free streaming service so I decided to give it a watch. So far I am 6 episodes in and although it started off very interesting (the YTube clip is the opening scene) it's getting a bit repetitive in the essential plots. Reddington says he can tell the FBI guys how to catch a particular badguy, sets up a sting operation and they catch them next episode similar but different badguy. OK there are some back stories intertwined as well but as there are 22 episodes in each of the 8 seasons I'm not sure if it's worth sticking with. I had a similar issue with House, Hugh Laurie's doctor series, in that nearly every episode followed a similar pattern

So the question to anyone who knows this show.......Is it worth keeping going?

We have binge-watched it until deep into the night.

HALF MAN (2026 - England)

Ruben and Niall grew up as brothers despite not being related by blood—one strong and fiercely loyal, the other quiet and gentle. Thirty years later, they reunite at Niall’s (Jamie Bell) wedding, but Ruben (Richard Gadd) seems uneasy and on edge; when a sudden act of violence erupts, it sends the story back through their shared past, revealing how their bond was shaped and how even the closest relationships can ultimately fall apart. (Wikipedia)

We have watched until today the first 3 episodes. We don't watch more - but I think we will. Not only that, but we've watched many movies and serials in the past. Many of them have been cruel and malicious. But this -- well this is hard to take. Sometimes it is too much for me! I don't know if I can recommend this. Try it for yourself if you want. ADOLESCENCE was hard, but here .....?????!!!!!

DOWN CEMETERY ROAD (2025)

Sarah Trafford obsessively searches for a missing neighbour girl after an explosion. Aided by PI Zoë Boehm, they uncover a conspiracy involving the presumed dead still living and living dying, embroiling them in a complex web. Imdb

I was drawn to this as it is written by the same writer as the excellent SLOW HORSES and produced by the same company. It stars Emma Thompson; Ruth Wilson; Adeel Akhtar & Darren Boyd so should be really good. It's okay but only okay, the 1st episode is a bit of a mess but it does settle down a bit for episodes 2 to 6 then goes off focus in ep 7 & 8 where my reaction to the plot was "Oh come on, really?" It seems to have a problem working out if it's a dark comedy or a tense psychological thriller

SAS: ROGUE HEROES

SAS: Rogue Heroes charts the creation of the famed special forces unit. Based on the book by Ben Macintyre.

A highly entertaining adrenaline filled show detailing the birth of the SAS. Great script; great cast - (including Jack O'Connell, Dominic West and Connor Swindells) ; well produced and filmed..... although using several '80s rock classics from the likes of AC/DC; The Clash & Motorhead was a little strange.

I binge watched Season 1 and have Season 2 waiting on the USB
